Hi Dad !

Don’t really know where to begin. Of the many letters I’ve written to you, this one is by far the hardest. I’ll start with what I always start with - THANK YOU! You remember we met and bonded even before I met your son, Jamel. It was awesome to see how happy you were that I connected with him and having the potential to have me as a daughter. But I don’t think you know how blessed I’ve been to call you the father I chose.

From the first day we toasted together, laughed, and shared stories to frequent visits to Atlanta while I was in college to MOVING IN and living with you and Mama Jenkins for 2+ years — I thank you! You never ever hesitated nor denied me. If anything you were a proponent of me living with you guys and I don’t think you realized how much that changed my life. In that time together, living with you, I can remember so fondly you bringing me breakfast in bed, having dinner prepared when I came home late from my Master’s classes, waking up extra early to defrost my car and clear off the ice from my windshield. You taught me every day what it felt like to be truly loved by a dad and I can never repay you for that. And when Jamel and I hit a bump in the road, you were instrumental in bringing us back together. I often envision you on my wedding day, standing behind Jamel as his best man. I could see you with tears of joy in your eyes because it had become official - I was/am your daughter.

Since then all I’ve ever wanted to do is bring happiness to your life and make you proud of me. I can smile knowing that I’ve done that as you’ve whispered that to me on several occasions. I will continue to make you proud, take care of your son, and give you those grandchildren you’ve been asking for, probably since the day Jamel and I told you we were an item LOL.

Thank you for making me smile, for being my shots buddy, for being my warm meal, for being my example, and for being God’s manifestation of a Father! Let’s just say you have successfully converted me to a Steelers fan!! I’ll be waving that Terrible Towel for you, Pops!

I can only begin with thank you. Thank you for teaching me to be a loving, graceful, life of the party, caring , God fearing man. You have always hustled for your family. I remember the one time that i knew how much you loved your family when they tried to make us wait outside of the greyhound station in the cold. You were not having it lol. You went to that car and grab your brass knuckles out of the trunk and told those people they better open up. You really defend and stick up your family. I am still working to stick up and defend as great you do but I will get there. Thank you for allowing me to always sleep in the bed. I learned so much from you guys through that.

I remember when I moved up here to live up here with you, just us too. I was able to get to know you 1 on 1 just us. I started to see how passionate you were about your work. I wanted to make you proud by getting into to college. The last 12 years with you in Atlanta have been impactful. We had a lot of great laughs, smiles, trials that we went through together , dances and relaxation. You are an amazing father, friend, husband, man and leader. I have loved seeing the impact that you have made and hearing all of the stories with you encouraging or making people laugh. You really allow people to be themselves not just that but you push them to believe in themselves as well. Thank you for teaching me how to change a tire, a car battery, being my best man and allow me the honor of standing a battle with you. You have created a legacy and we will continue to let it grow. I love you with all my heart. You are the best dad ever. I pray and I hope that I make as big of an impact as you and don’t worry, I will keep the family together, always lookout for the guy that maybe getting overlooked, help grow people in their passion and take care of mommy, Michelle and my brothers.

From the very first time I met you, I was struck by your sense of humor, and your gentle nature. you make me laugh, and I have watched over the years how you and fred interact. I think I was even envious of yours and fred's relationship, that he has always been able to lean on you and depend on you to be there to make him think, and laugh. you are his best friend, and i have always wanted one of those (a best friend sibling). sometimes I think he felt like he was leading you, but you have seemed to see life another way, your way. you let others do the worrying. maybe you have worried too, but I think that it is healthy to let somebody else engage in all that "drama" of worrying and fussing. I love that about you. I remember the trips to follow you all around, visiting you wherever y'all were living at the time, how you always have an open home, open heart, and I have always felt immediately comfortable, and at home around your house. you are a staple in fred's life. we love you so much.

There is something "Amazing" about a man that will dance to his own sheet of music and you Sir (Larry "Chef" Jenkins") has always been that man.

As a young man moving from New York City back to Charleston I found out that I had 3 sisters & 5 brothers born with the last name Jenkins.

There was nothing more exciting to me than walking from my house to your house on any given Saturday to see you all, even in the 90 degree heat, I could not wait to see you on the couch with a blank look on your face and that toothbrush in your mouth ... muffling the nickname you called me out of LOVE ... "POT" 😁😁😁! How did you get here? You would always ask out of pure concern. With the innocence of a kid I would always respond ... I walked! That always put a smile on your face!

The way you most inspired me is how you carried yourself as a Son, Father, Husband,, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and all around Great Guy! Last but not least how you Love your wife and children unconditionally and never seemed to let small things get in the way of being the best provider that you could be and for that my bother "I WILL FOREVER LOVE YOU"!

Dear Sweet Uncle Larry,

There’s never ever been a time when you and I have been together that you have not made me laugh. In fact, I know every time we talk I was going to have a belly ache from laughing at something you would say. That’s just who you are, my fun loving uncle. You’ve put a smile on my face always, even when I was a child. Growing up together on the Island and in Yazza’s house was some of the best times we’ve had. Our family never concentrated on what we didn’t have, but always on sticking together through the good times and the bad. That’s just what we did. That’s how we were raised. There was a time, I know you don’t remember, when you asked me to wash by hand a pair of jeans of yours to where to school. I was maybe 11 or 12. Well I did as you asked, hung it up to dry and you wore it the next day. For some reason Nonnie knew to ask if I rinsed out the soap before drying it. I said no, didn’t know I was supposed to. You looked at me and said oh well, soap just makes the crease straighter and put a little more pep in my step. (Lol) You didn’t care. We were family. Although now that I think about it, you didn’t ask me to wash clothes for you ever again after that. Also, remember that time you had a new job, I think as a brick mason. It was the most money you had made at that point in your life. You came home one day after getting paid and started to sing a song. “I got money to burn, I got money to burn.” And you literally burned dollar bills in the wood stove while singing that song. Just being your silly fun-loving self. I love you for showing all of us how not to take life too seriously. I love you for always staying on the positive side of things. I love you for always willing to help out like when Ariel graduated from high school and you came through like the hero you are with tons of food to barbecue at the party. I love you for loving me just as if I were your own. I love you for being my uncle 24/7, knowing you would be there for me if I needed you at anytime. I love you for the husband and father that you are forever embracing your children and loving your wife unconditionally. I simply, simply, whole-heartedly love you. Jehovah God loves you too, way more than you can imagine. He is, “the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our trials.” 2 Corinthians 1:3,4. In all your thoughts look towards Him. Hey Mr. Jenkins!

I can remember the first time your son (Jamel) invited us to come to Atlanta and formally spent our first holiday with y’all. You made quite the impact.

First, it was Thanksgiving, and second, I quickly realized the Michelle wasn’t lying—you are an amazing chef. The combination of those (2) things alone was magic. That being said, it wasn’t the only magical thing about that first Thanksgiving together I remember. To see you interacting with your sons, and your wife, altogether in that basement (aka, “mancave”) — that was also magic, and something I hadn’t personally experienced, not like that.

Your family has been nothing short of hospitable, warm, and welcoming—and you deserve a lot of that credit. You in-particular have always been not only a funny and fun-loving, genuine-spirited person to be around, you’ve also been a role model from a distance. Looking forward to you getting back on your feet and continuing to leave your mark.

Where do I begin?

For as long as I can remember you have and will always be my favorite uncle (lol). I tell you this all the time. Not that I don’t love the others, but I’ve always felt a connection with you. Something special that I can’t quite put a finger on ( the coolest uncle ever). Even though we don’t speak everyday. If I need a male perspective, a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or just laugh about these as you would say “knuckle head” guys that I encounter. I know that I can count on you for sound advice. I always think about every time we would see each other or speak you would always ask, “ Shon, you have a boyfriend yet ?”😃 And my response would always be, “ No not yet or nobody special.” Until last year when you asked once again and finally the answer was “YES”. Then the new question became, “When are you getting married?” I ❤️ our relationship conversations. If I had to choose one life lesson that I’ve learned from you it would be “Patience” I could go on and on but you already know what it is. You told me last month that your going to dance🕺🏽 at my wedding and you will. I know you will. Rather it’s physical or spiritual you’ll be there (a man of your word).

Some of my best childhood memories are the ones with you and aunt debbie. I remember always being the ONLY girl! As much as I wanted to hang out with all the boys they would never let me. You were always there to either yell at the guys for not letting me join in or let me hang out with you instead. Going to the beach was always my favorite. Some of the best pictures we have together are the ones from the beach. You spoiled me rotten when we came to visit and I loved every second of it.

As I got older I developed a love of the kitchen and still have that love today. Between you and my dad I learned so much about cooking and you guys were always willing to let me help out no matter how small the job. Mom and dad talked about me taking African dance classes all the time so everytime we came down, you wanted me to dance and I reluctantly did it. Or sometimes cried to get out of it. So embarrassing. I am truly blessed to be your favorite lol just kidding (not really kidding). You don't have to admit it in front of everyone but I know I was your favorite.

I have to start out by saying that you the Jenkins Family have been major impacts in my life and the man I am today. Thank you for accepting me and opening your home (and kitchen) to me when I first moved to Florida and knew no one and making me apart of the family. I have to talk about all the great meals you cooked and especially those jumbo chicken wings that I had to ask LJ how to make. Every time you feed me I always seemed to end up asleep on the floor and even on those stairs in Georgia. Thanks for all the rides home from school and being around you and mama Jenkins was always fun and I could feel the love and excitement. I also have to say I appreciate all the holidays and even though i'm in introvert by nature because I am apart of the family have to keep with the traditions of the talent show for Christmas / New Year or the push-ups for bowling. Coming from a place of some experience I want you to know that I'm as stubborn as LJ and that i'm taking every moment as it comes and don't accept what doctor's say. We are family and just like you guys were there for us when my father was battling that i'll be there to support my brothers and mama Jenkins yesterday, today and in the future and that is more than just words. I love you and know everything will be ok.

Also I told LJ when he gets there he has to make you cook a big feast for him.

I just wanted to let you know you are one of the most important men in my life... not only did u raise 4 important men in my life... you helped raised me... Hey Chef! I think back 18 years ago when Deb was bringing the whole family over for a cookout and to meet Butch. I said I hope Butch and Larry hit it off because Butch is so quiet. To my surprise, it was like I was home again in Cleveland with my real family. Butch and Larry hit it off like “brothers from another mother”. Larry, I also love you like a brother. You have the greatest smile and you always show us so much love. When we are with your family, it is like a party with us laughing, talking, drinking, dancing and enjoying ourselves. It could be 1 or 2 o’clock in the morning and I would always come and say “Let’s have one more drink for the road”. We are so blessed to have you and Deb in our lives. I love you!

Larry, you are like the brother I never had. I am not a “people person” like Net and I normally keep to myself. But when you are around, I feel I can be myself and talk to you like a brother. Since day one you have always open your doors and given me a home away from home . My parents from dayton so you know they wouldnt let me go no where when we first moved down here to Florida , but they always were comfortable with me coming to the Jenkins house ( except for the one time in middle school when josh had me out late on school night in the back of them ppl pick up truck singing church hymns)lol. The great foundation you set for your family and house hold always shines bright through mama J's smile and the morals and respect each of my brothers have in them . They are all 4 a great reflection of you and mama J team work . I never had a blood brothers only a little sister , so when me and josh linked up in middle school it was no turning back it was a true blessing to become apart of this family. All the laughs, Great home cooked meals and mr J mini bar chronicles will always be great memories for me . We still have many more memories to build pops . What can I say! From the moment our families have connected, having you in our lives is a true testimony in how you do not need to be blood related to be family. Singing, dancing and bonding over food has been enjoyable but most of all just the memories we have created and shared sticks with me the most. You're always smiling and in amazing spirits; you light up a room when you enter it. For someone like me who hasn't been privileged to grow up with a lot of immediate family or much family at all. I'm grateful to say I have family in you! Side note: you're the only guy I know who can keep up with us young folks on the dance floor lol…me and Jyson love you so much and can't wait to see you!

I’m writing you to let you know how you’ve impacted my heart with your presence. You and your family have never been anything but welcoming with open arms. The first day I met you you had a huge smile on your face and it has never left. I thank you for the time you’ve allowed Chris and I to stay at your home, hang out in your kitchen and all the spaces. We felt very at home there. I will never forget just lounging around in the den and you came home from working all day and asked me if I was hungry...I was literally SO excited because I had heard how great of a cook you were, I could NOT refuse! I said yes, of course, and you turned around and went in the kitchen and only what it seemed like minutes later came back with a linguine shrimp Alfredo! The shrimp were HUGE. You had no idea it was one of my favorite dishes and it was AMAZING. I’m not sure why that memory stays with me besides the fact that I felt so honored and loved by your heart to feed me after you’d been working so hard all day. But it is a forever treasured memory. I thank you Mr. Jenkins. I thank you for your love for us, for your family, and always showing your huge heart. This is what will always live on in My heart for you.

I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you and your family for the kindness you all have shown me over the years. Whether it was me coming over to watch Steelers games with you or hang out with you all on New Year's Eve, or even spending time with you all on Thanksgiving. I have always felt welcomed by you and your family. I still remember when I went to Atlanta a few years ago for Thanksgiving and I stayed at your house for the Holidays. It felt like I was staying at a resort because you made sure that we had great meals for breakfast lunch and dinner. I was so full, and the food was great, but even better was the time that I got to spend with you and your family. You treated me like I was one of your own kids and I am so Thankful and appreciative of that. Those are memories that I will always cherish.

I always respected how you raised your boys to be caring, not just to one another, but to everyone that they come in contact with. I know that is a trait that they got from you and Mrs. Jenkins. And I know how proud they are to have you as a father and how much you mean to them. And you mean a lot to all of us too! We always enjoy seeing you when you come down to visit. I know me personally, I enjoy watching the Steelers games with you when you're in town. I still remember one time when I was at the apartment watching a game with you, and you gave me a Steelers cup to take home with me. I still have that cup at my house today, and I still drink out of it, lol. I look forward to watching many more Steelers games with you, and I want you to know how much we all Love you and appreciate everything you have done for us over the years, and I appreciate the great hospitality you have always shown me when I have visited you in Atlanta and when you come to Orlando. I always call you pops because you have always been that father figure ever since I met you through Jamel and Michelle. Your house has always been open for me and my family with a delicious meal every time. I remember when I told you and Miss Jenkins about my career pursuit after college, you both encouraged me to always work a hard, and that you’ll always support me along the way which was very encouraging. You also have this Aura of happiness, joy, optimism that God has given you and those qualities have always rubbed off to those around you including me, you never get angry and always look at the best in people, and obviously everyone knows that you are hands down the best chef, and I’m forever grateful for letting us taste some of your meals. This last couple of years of kicking cancer back to hell comes from our father in Heaven, but it also comes from the fact that you never quit, ever! You are such an inspiration and Pops, I know that the God who started the Good work in you will continue doing it. One think that I still have beef with you is not becoming a falcons fan though, and to stop wearing that yellow Pittsburg Jersey and their terrible towel, but I’m still working on that so in due time you will . I love you pops and my family and I are with you along the recovery journey.

I have always seen you with a big smile on your face. You have an infectious energy, the kind of energy that can't be manufactured because its just in you. Being on a team with you during Thanksgaming is on of my favorite things because you're bound to make it fun and hilarious. What stands out the most about you is how you love your family and people. I remember the first time I meet you Gustave and I came over to your house and it was a couple days after thanksgiving and we were coming to hangout and you guys had already finished eating. But when we got there without even asking us if we wanted something to eat you brought all the found back out and told us to help ourselves and welcomed us in to your home like we had been there before. To be honest, I never really saw dads in that capacity. So this simple interaction made a lasting impression on me and shows just how giving and loving you are. I want you to know that people don't only see that love when they are around you they feel it, even if its someone meeting you for the first time.

Sending you all my prayers during this hard time. You are such a light to myself and everybody you meet, always positive,happy,laughing,cracking jokes lol. I thank you for accepting me and my family as part of yours. I pray for healing and peace in this storm. Stay strong, pray and always remember faith and fair don’t belong in the same sentence.
